Implicit Visuomotor Adaptation Remains Limited after Several Days of Training

چکیده

Abstract Learning in sensorimotor adaptation tasks has been viewed as an implicit learning phenomenon. The process affords recalibration of existing motor skills so that the system can adjust to changes body or environment without relearning from scratch. However, recent findings suggest is heavily constrained, calling into question its utility and theoretical framework paradigms. These inferences have based mainly on results single bouts training, where explicit compensation strategies, such explicitly re-aiming intended movement direction, contribute a significant proportion adaptive learning. It possible, however, supersedes strategies over repeated practice sessions. We tested this by dissociating contributions human participants five consecutive days training. Despite substantially longer duration still plateaued at value far short complete and, observed previous studies, was inappropriate for mirror-reversal task. Notably, we find between subject differences call traditional interpretation these group-level results.

Limited Plasticity of Prismatic Visuomotor Adaptation

Movements toward an object displaced optically through prisms adapt quickly, a striking example for the plasticity of neuronal visuomotor programs. We investigated the degree and time course of this system's plasticity. Participants performed goal-directed throwing or pointing movements with terminal feedback before, during, and after wearing prism goggles shifting the visual world laterally ei...

Knowledge of performance is insufficient for implicit visuomotor rotation adaptation.

The ability to adapt is a fundamental and vital characteristic of the motor system. The authors altered the visual environment and focused on the ability of humans to adapt to a rotated environment in a reaching task, in the absence of continuous visual information about their hand location. Subjects could not see their arm but were provided with post trial knowledge of performance depicting ha...

An implicit plan overrides an explicit strategy during visuomotor adaptation.

The relationship between implicit and explicit processes during motor learning, and for visuomotor adaptation in particular, is poorly understood. We set up a conflict between implicit and explicit processes by instructing subjects to counter a visuomotor rotation using a cognitive strategy in a pointing task. Specifically, they were told the exact nature of the directional perturbation, a rota...

Visuomotor adaptation in head-mounted virtual reality versus conventional training

Immersive, head-mounted virtual reality (HMD-VR) provides a unique opportunity to understand how changes in sensory environments affect motor learning. However, potential differences in mechanisms of motor learning and adaptation in HMD-VR versus a conventional training (CT) environment have not been extensively explored. Here, we investigated whether adaptation on a visuomotor rotation task in...

Preschool Children’s Memory for Word Forms Remains Stable Over Several Days, but Gradually Decreases after 6 Months

Research on word learning has focused on children's ability to identify a target object when given the word form after a minimal number of exposures to novel word-object pairings. However, relatively little research has focused on children's ability to retrieve the word form when given the target object. The exceptions involve asking children to recall and produce forms, and children typically ...
